Air Fryer Banana Chips

These Air Fryer Banana Chips are irresistibly crunchy, naturally sweet, and made with minimal oil. Ready in less than 20 minutes, they provide a healthy, guilt-free alternative to traditional fried snacks, bursting with tropical flavor in every bite. Perfect for quick snacking, party platters, or lunchbox additions, these chips lock in crispiness without drying out the bananas.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • Green or slightly ripe bananas (firm, under-ripe preferred for best crispiness) – 2 to 3 bananas
  • Light cooking oil (coconut or olive oil) – 1 to 2 teaspoons
  • Salt – a pinch

Optional Spices

  • Cinnamon – 1/4 teaspoon (optional)
  • Paprika – 1/4 teaspoon (optional)
  • Chili powder – 1/4 teaspoon (optional)
  • Vinegar powder or lemon zest – a dash (optional)
  • Honey (for drizzle post-cooking) – 1 teaspoon (optional)
  • Herbs like rosemary, thyme, or garlic powder – 1/4 teaspoon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bananas: Peel the bananas and slice them thinly and evenly, about 1/8 inch thick. Using a mandoline slicer can make this faster and ensures uniform thickness for even cooking.
  2. Toss with Oil and Seasoning: In a large bowl, gently toss the banana slices with just enough oil to coat each piece lightly. Sprinkle salt and any optional spices at this stage to infuse flavor.
  3. Arrange in the Air Fryer Basket: Spread the banana slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket, making sure they don’t overlap. You may need to cook in batches depending on your air fryer size.
  4. Air Fry Until Crispy: Set the air fryer to 350°F (175°C) and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, shaking the basket every 5 minutes to promote even cooking and prevent burning.
  5. Cool and Enjoy: Once golden and crunchy, carefully remove the chips and let them cool on a wire rack. This resting period helps them crisp up even more before enjoying immediately or storing.

Notes

  • Use a sharp knife or mandoline to slice bananas uniformly for consistent crispiness.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket; cook in batches if necessary for proper crisping.
  • Start checking the chips at 10 minutes to avoid burning, as air fryer models vary.
  • Let chips cool completely outside the air fryer to firm up their crunchy texture.
  • Use neutral oils like coconut, olive, or avocado for best crisp and mild flavor.
  • Drizzle honey or sprinkle seasoning after air frying while chips are warm for better adherence.
  • Store leftover chips in an airtight container at room temperature; best consumed within 2-3 days.
  • Freezing is not recommended as it may cause sogginess upon thawing.
  • Reheat chips in the air fryer at 350°F for 2-3 minutes to restore crispiness if needed.
