Ingredients

Pickle & Coating Ingredients

  • Dill pickles: 3-4 firm, crunchy pickles
  • Flour: ½ cup (can substitute gluten-free flour)
  • Egg wash: 2 large eggs, beaten (or plant-based milk with 1 tsp flaxseed meal for vegan option)
  • Panko breadcrumbs: 1 cup (or gluten-free panko)
  • Cooking spray or oil mist: as needed

Spices for Coating Mix

  • Garlic powder: 1 tsp
  • Paprika: 1 tsp
  • Cayenne pepper: ¼ to ½ tsp (adjust to taste)
  • Salt: ½ tsp
  • Black pepper: ¼ tsp

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pickles: Slice your dill pickles into thin, even rounds to ensure they cook uniformly and reach maximum crispiness.
  2. Set Up Coating Stations: In one bowl, mix the flour with half of the seasoning spices; in another bowl, beat the eggs (or vegan substitute) for the wash; in a third bowl, combine panko breadcrumbs with the remaining spice mix to coat the chips perfectly.
  3. Coat the Pickle Slices: Dip each pickle slice first into the seasoned flour, then into the egg wash, and finally into the panko and spice mixture, pressing gently to adhere the crumbs well.
  4. Air Fry to Crispy Perfection: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Place the coated pickle chips in a single layer inside the basket, spray lightly with cooking oil, and air fry for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.
  5. Cool and Serve: Allow chips to cool briefly to set their crisp exterior, then serve fresh for the best crunchy texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Use firm dill pickles with less moisture to maximize crunch.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket; cook in batches if needed for even crisping.
  • Panko breadcrumbs are preferred for their light, airy texture and superior crunch.
  • Season both flour and panko layers to amplify flavor.
  • Lightly spray chips with oil for crispness without deep frying.
  • Adjust spice levels by varying cayenne or adding chili powder/hot sauce.
  • For vegan version, substitute egg wash with plant milk and flaxseed meal or aquafaba.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days; reheat in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 3-5 minutes.
  • Freeze leftover chips on a tray before transferring to a freezer bag, and reheat as above.
  • Garnish with fresh dill or parsley for enhanced aroma and color.
