Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 1 pizza dough ball (fresh or store-bought, approx. 12 oz)

Meat Filling

  • 8 oz Italian sausage (casings removed)
  • 8 oz ground beef or turkey
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • ¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Cheese

  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Additional Ingredients

  • 23 fresh basil leaves (optional)
  • Marinara or pizza sauce for dipping or spreading (optional)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meat Filling: Cook the Italian sausage and ground beef in a skillet over medium heat until no longer pink and browned evenly. Drain any excess fat, then add minced garlic, dried basil, oregano, crushed red pepper flakes if using, salt, and pepper. Stir well and cook for another minute to combine flavors. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly to prevent soggy dough when assembling.
  2. Roll Out the Dough: Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the pizza dough into a rectangle approximately 12 by 16 inches. Aim for an even thickness that is sturdy enough to hold the filling but not too thick to bake through properly.
  3. Assemble the Stromboli: Spread the meat mixture evenly over the dough, leaving about a 1-inch border around the edges. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan on top of the meat filling. Add fresh basil leaves for a burst of herbal freshness if desired.
  4. Roll and Seal: Starting from one long side, carefully roll the dough tightly like a jelly roll, keeping the filling contained. Pinch and seal the edges firmly to prevent leakage. Tuck the rolled ends underneath the stromboli to secure the filling inside during baking.
  5. Brush and Bake: Place the stromboli onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Beat the egg and brush the entire surface of the stromboli with the egg wash, then lightly brush olive oil over the top for a golden, crisp crust. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 25-30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese inside is bubbly and melted.

Notes

  • Do not overload the filling to avoid leaks or undercooked dough.
  • Allow the meat filling to cool slightly before assembling to keep the dough from becoming soggy.
  • Use parchment paper on the baking sheet to prevent sticking and facilitate easy transfer.
  • Slice the stromboli while still warm to maintain shape and reveal gooey layers.
  • Serve with warm marinara sauce or garlic butter for dipping to enhance the flavor.
