Ingredients

Scale

Beef and Marinade

  • 1 lb flank or skirt steak, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 clove garlic, minced

Sauce

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup water or beef broth

Stir-Fry

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Optional veggies: 1 cup bell peppers or broccoli florets

Garnish

  • 3 green onions, chopped
  • Optional: toasted sesame seeds

Serving

  • Steamed jasmine rice, noodles, or cauliflower rice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef: Slice the beef thinly across the grain to ensure tenderness. Pat the slices dry with paper towels to promote a good sear. Optionally, marinate the beef in soy sauce and minced garlic for 10 minutes to enhance flavor and tenderness.
  2. Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, minced garlic, grated ginger, and water or broth until the sugar dissolves, creating a savory-sweet sauce base.
  3. Cook the Beef: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add beef strips in a single layer to allow even browning. Cook until beef is browned on both sides but not fully cooked through, about 2-3 minutes per side. Avoid overcrowding the pan; cook in batches if necessary.
  4. Add the Sauce and Vegetables: Pour the prepared sauce over the browned beef in the pan. Toss to coat and bring to a simmer, allowing the sauce to thicken and the beef to finish cooking. Add any optional vegetables such as bell peppers or broccoli and cook until just tender, about 3-4 minutes.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Remove the pan from heat, toss in chopped green onions and sprinkle toasted sesame seeds if desired. Serve the saucy beef mixture over steamed jasmine rice, noodles, or cauliflower rice for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Marinate beef briefly for extra flavor and tenderness.
  • Cook over high heat to quickly sear and lock in juices.
  • Pat beef dry before cooking to achieve better browning.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan; stir-fry in batches if necessary.
  • Adjust brown sugar quantity to balance sweetness with saltiness.
  • Optional: Add crushed red pepper flakes or sriracha for a spicy variation.
  • To keep gluten-free, substitute tamari for soy sauce.
