Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup green bell peppers, finely diced
  • 1/2 cup yellow onions, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 oz provolone cheese, sliced
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (or gluten-free breadcrumbs for gluten-free version)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Sauté the Vegetables – Heat 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the finely diced green bell peppers, yellow onions, and minced garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened and caramelized, about 7-10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Step 2: Prepare the Meat Mixture – In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, egg, sautéed vegetables, salt, and pepper. Gently mix with your hands or a spatula until just combined to avoid toughening the meatloaf.
  3. Step 3: Layer in the Provolone Cheese – On a piece of parchment paper or in a greased loaf pan, shape half of the meat mixture into a loaf shape. Evenly layer the sliced provolone cheese on top. Cover with the remaining meat mixture, fully encasing the cheese within the loaf.
  4. Step 4: Bake to Perfection – Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the meatloaf on a lined baking sheet or in the loaf pan. Bake for 55-65 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C). Once done, let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes before slicing to allow the juices to redistribute.
  5. Step 5: Serve and Enjoy – Slice the Philly Cheesesteak Meatloaf with Provolone Cheese to your preferred thickness. Garnish if desired with fresh parsley or extra shredded provolone and serve with your favorite sides.

Notes

  • Don’t skip sweating the veggies: softening peppers and onions enhances sweetness and prevents watery meatloaf.
  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure the meatloaf is perfectly cooked but remains juicy and tender.
  • Allow the meatloaf to rest for 10 minutes before slicing to keep slices intact and juicy.
  • Choose quality provolone cheese for better melting and authentic cheesesteak texture.
  • Mix ingredients gently and just until combined to avoid a tough meatloaf.
