Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend for gluten-free version)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts)
  • Optional: 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom (for spiced variant)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened (or vegan butter for vegan version)
  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk (or dairy-free condensed milk for vegan version)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Coating

  • Powdered sugar (for rolling the baked cookies)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Beat the softened unsalted butter until smooth and creamy. Gradually add the sweetened condensed milk and vanilla extract, mixing well until fully combined and slightly fluffy.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt. Fold in chopped nuts or chosen spices if using any flavor variations.
  3. Mix Wet and Dry Ingredients: Slowly incorporate the flour mixture into the wet ingredients, stirring gently to form a soft, crumbly dough that holds together but is not sticky.
  4. Shape the Cookies: Roll the dough into small, evenly sized balls—about one inch each—and place them on an ungreased baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them a couple of inches apart.
  5. Bake to Perfection: Bake the cookies in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the bottoms turn a very light golden color without browning the tops.
  6. Coat with Powdered Sugar: Let the cookies cool for about 5 minutes, then gently roll or dust them in powdered sugar while still warm so they get that beautiful snowy coating.

Notes

  • Use room temperature butter to ensure easy creaming and perfect dough consistency.
  • Don’t overbake; watch cookies closely to keep them tender and crumbly.
  • Mix ingredients just until combined to avoid tough cookies.
  • Roll cookies in powdered sugar while warm for best coating.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature to maintain softness.
  • Cookies stay fresh up to one week stored properly.
  • Freeze unbaked dough balls or baked cookies wrapped tightly for up to three months.
  • Warm cookies gently before serving to revive softness if stored chilled or frozen.
